Zobo leaves are dried calyces of the hibiscus flower. They are commonly used to make a refreshing drink called Zobo in Nigeria and other parts of West Africa. The drink is sweet, tangy and often deep red in color. Zobo leaves are also called hibiscus flower or sorrel flower. They contain a potent enzyme inhibitor that blocks the production of amylase, an enzyme involved in the breakdown of complex sugars and starches. By inhibiting amylase, Zobo leaf can effectively lower blood sugar levels and in turn decrease blood pressure.
